Nigeria’s First Female VC And Prof. Of Mathematics, Grace Alele-Williams Is Dead

The first female Vice Chancellor in Nigeria, and a renown Professor of Mathematics, Grace Alele Williams is Dead.


Born December 16, 1932, the 89 years old Professor Grace Alele-Williams, died on Friday 25th of March, 2022. 


Prof. Alele-Williams, was a seasoned educationist who came to limelight as the first Nigerian woman to receive a doctorate degree; and also the first female Vice Chancellor of the University of Benin (UNIBEN), in Edo State. 


Late Prof. Grace Alele-Williams was born in Warri, Delta state. She attended Government School, Warri; Queen’s College, Lagos, and the University College of Ibadan (now University of Ibadan)


In 1957, Grace obtained a Master’s degree in Mathematics while teaching at Queen’s School, Ede in Osun State; and in 1963, she bagged a PhD in Mathematics Education at the University of Chicago in the United States of America (USA), thereby, making her the first Nigerian woman to be awarded a Doctorate degree.
