The Nigerian Communications Commission, NCC, has considered it fit, to warn Nigerians of impending danger posed by fraudsters to unsuspecting telecommunications users.
In a statement released by the Commission, signed by the Director, Public Affairs of NCC, Dr. Ikechukwu Adinde, it was clearly stated that, citizens should be wary of any online publication, or website, under the title “Davido Airtime, and Data Giveaway”, urging phone users to click a link for free airtime or data bonus.
According to Director Adinde, the online information is untrue, the handiwork of fraudsters, or scammers, meant to defraud citizens, especially, of valuable information.
“In the advertorial, the general public is urged to hurry and get the gifts, by clicking on the links, that supposedly redirect them to network sites, where they will be credited with airtime and data. This is a scam.”
Dr. Adinde reiterated that, the aim of the fraudsters is to exploit the generosity, and kindness of the music star, to rob people.
“Exploiting Davido’s benevolence, a group of scammers, rolled out an advertorial titled, “Davido Airtime and Data Giveaway”, which went viral, with the claim that, Davido is giving out free 5K airtime, and 10GB internet data of All Networks, to celebrate his birthday.”
NCC through its spokesperson, Adinde, therefore advised, telecommunications consumers across the country, to ignore the advert, and/or, it ‘bogus enticements’, stressing that, it is the principal work of scammers.
“The NCC wishes to advise our teeming telecom consumers, to have nothing to do with the advert, or, any similar bogus enticements.”
“The adverts are what they are – social engineering rip-offs, designed to get people’s Mobile Station Integrated Services Digital Network, (MSISDN), and other information, that fraudsters can use later to defraud unsuspecting telecom consumers, and members of the public.”
“For clarity, the MSISDN, is simply, the full phone number of a cellphone, in addition to other protocol information.”
“This number is unique, and identifies subscribers/owners in a Global System for Mobile Communications, or other mobile networks.”
The Commission again, alerted all citizens on the need to be conscious of this new development, put together by internet fraudsters.
“Therefore, it suffices to state that, any unscrupulous person, or unethical hacker, can use the number, and attendant protocol, to undermine the privacy of the real owners of the number through identity theft and other scams.”
Recall that, David Adeleke aka, Davido, ‘Omo Baba Olowo’, at the weekend, announced that, a sum of N200 million was donated to him by his friends, fans, and colleagues in the industry, during his N100m challenge to Nigerians as a way to celebrate his birthday.
Davido’s goal, after being met, he decided to donate all the amount collected to Nigerian orphanages, even with an additional N50million from his pocket; making the donation to orphanages N250million.
