Court Sacks Ex-Speaker Yakubu Dogara From House of Reps Over Defection

Justice Donatus Okorowo of the Federal High Court, Abuja, has ordered the immediate removal of the former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, from the National Assembly for defecting from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC)

Delivering judgment, Justice Okorowo upheld that, having dumped PDP to return to APC, Dogara was no longer qualified to occupy his seat as a member of the Assembly representing Dass, Tafawa Balewa and Bogoro Federal Constituency of Bauchi State by virtue of Section 68(1)(g) of the constitution.

Recall that, Dogara was elected speaker on the platform of APC in 2015, but he defected to PDP in the build-up to the 2019 polls. He was however re-elected to the House again, but he was unable to return as the speaker as the ruling APC won the majority of the seats.

Dogara therefore returned to APC on July 27, 2020, an action that made PDP head to court for his removal.
