A ‘merciless and brutal’ criminal syndicate, allegedly behind series of recent attacks on private citizens and security personnel, in the South-East, has been uncovered by troops of 82 Division of the Nigerian Army in Enugu, following a tip-off.
As gathered, one of the alleged masterminds of the terrorist group, is one Mr. Tochukwu Okeke, alias Owo, a former Special Assistant to one of the governors in the South-East.
The well-structured syndicate, armed with sophisticated weapons, reportedly targeted men of the security agencies, especially policemen, soldiers and at other times, civilians.
Before the tip-off that led to the arrest of some of the gangster leaders, and the uncovering of some of their hideouts, the group was said to be behind the attacks of police stations and military facilities within Enugu metropolis.
Places the alleged criminals were said to have invaded, steal firearms and destroyed include: Adani Police Division, a Military Checkpoint along Adani- Omoh road, Ezeagu Police Division, Military Checkpoint along Orji River-Udi road, Military Checkpoint along Enugu Abakaliki Road, and a host of others.
Information gathered also attested that, during a raid of one of their camps, at Akpawfu-Amangwunze in Nkanu West Local Government Area, several arms, ammunition, cars and charms were said to have been recovered from the place.
The arrested gang leader, Okeke, and other members of the team, are learnt to still be in the custody of military men in Enugu, Enugu State.
