Increased Statistics Reports On Domestic, Sexual Violence … Lagos State DSVRT

The Lagos State government, through the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Response Team (DSVRT), has revealed that, as at August 26, 2021, more than 10,000 cases of domestic violence, which involved adults and children, have been attended to by the State’s DSVRT.


This report was made known by the organizers of the Lagos State DSVRT, during a media brief held in Lagos, to commemorate this year’s Domestic and Sexual Violence Awareness month, being September.


At the media parley, the State’s Attorney-General, Moyosore Onigbanjo, SAN, said, the vision and activities of DSVRT, are in complete alignment with the Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu led administration’s ‘THEMES’ agenda, in particular, in the areas of Health, Education, Security and Good Governance.


Gov. Sanwo-Olu’s ‘THEMES’ agenda represents: Traffic Management and Transportation; Health and Environment; Education and Technology; Making Lagos a 21st Century State; Security and Good Governance.


The Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, who doubles as the Chairman of this year’s DSVRT event, also gave out the statistics of the cases, as compiled by the Team. It read: 4,150 domestic violence; 177 rape; 255 rape/sexual assault attempts; 246 sexual assault by penetration/threat; 877 number of cases having to do with separation, not taking responsibilities of children, neglect, among other related offences.


Others include: 436 child abuse/physical assaults; 271 defilement cases; 13 defilement by minor to minor; 454 child labour, abduction, neglect/others; 148 sexual harassment/molestation cases.


Also, a total number of 2,980 children were reported to have experienced emotional abuse, through exposure to domestic violence, within the home, for the period under review.


The Attorney-General again, made it known that, in 2021, the Lagos state DSVRT, gave supports to 10 (ten) persons with disabilities, who were experiencing one form of Gender Based Violence (GBV), or other forms of abuse, but unfortunately, 5 (five) persons were reported dead by DSVRT, based on domestic violence.


Attorney-General, Moyosore Onigbanjo, SAN, however, stressed that, going forward, offenders of domestic and sexual violence, in Lagos State, will get weighty punishments if found guilty.
