Is Killing Deborah a Pride to Our Nation? … CAN President

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has called for a peaceful protest in solidarity to Deborah Yakubu, the 200 level student of Shehu Shagari College of Education in Sokoto State, who was gruesomely murdered for alleged blasphemy.

Speaking from Ibadan on Monday, CAN president, Samson Ayokunle said, the Christian Association has petitioned the international human rights groups over Deborah’s death because according to him, “Our government is not doing anything about it, so we call on international bodies.”

He said, “Killing Deborah, is that a pride to our nation?”

Ayokunle, who warned that “Nobody has monopoly of violence”, however, called on “Christians to respect other peoples’ religious views”, while condemning Deborah’s murder in strong terms, adding that she did not actually mention the name of any religious prophets according to reports he gathered before she was unjustly killed in the most barbaric way.

CAN is therefore demanding justice for the late Deborah Yakubu who was buried over the weekend in her hometown in Niger state amidst tears and lamentations.

Sources also said, the northern states CAN, may likely stop attending inter-religion council meetings in northern regions.

Advising the government, Ayokunle called for home grown democracy that will give everyone sense of belonging in the country; other than some few people taking laws into their hands.
