The High Court, sitting in Lagos, presided over by Justice D. E. Osiagor, has said, all marriages conducted at Federal registries across the country, including the Ikoyi Registry, in Lagos State, is illegal.
Justice Osiagor also emphasized that, only the local government marriage registries, were empowered by the provisions of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), to conduct marriage affairs.
He therefore submitted that, all marriages solemnized at the Federal Ministry of Interior, through any of the marriage registries, is unacceptable.
According to Justice Osiagor, the Federal Government, FG, have no business in conducting marriages, and issuance of marriage certificates.
He then ordered the closure of all marriage registries, opened, and operated by the Federal Ministry of Interior, including the Ikoyi Marriage Registry, in Lagos State.
Reports gathered confirmed how the Eti Osa Local Government Area, LGA, of Lagos State, had taken the Ministry of Interior, and the Attorney General of the Federation, to court, indicting the Federal Ministry of Interior of arrogating the power of the Local Government to itself by operating marriage registries, conducting marriages, and issuing marriage certificates, contrary to the Nigerian law.
