A drama presentation, by the Duke of Somolu Production, a theatre company run by Joseph Edgar, titled: “Awo: The Man, His Jewel And…” which took place at Glover Hall, Lagos, drew the attention of top politicians, which include, the Vice President of Nigeria, Professor Yemi Osinbajo and other dignitaries.
The play, which was directed by Makinde Adeniran, was meant to honour the late sage and to showcase his political life and times and that of his wife, Chief (Mrs.) Hannah Dideolu Awolowo, the woman whom Pa. Awolowo himself described as ‘a jewel of inestimable value.’
Different dignitaries who spoke at the event, in no small way, praised the organizers for coming up with such a well thought out narrative about the life and times of the couple who stood together through thick and thin.
Barrister Soyode, who spoke on behalf of the Awolowo’s family, said,
“The drama offers a simple human narrative to the turbulences and victories of a family man devoted to the cause of freedom for all, life more abundant; and a wife that stood by him through thick and thin.”
Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Gbajabiamila who also spoke at event, praised the Producer, Edga, for a well-thought out storyline that could stand the test of time.
“Let me very quickly commend Edga on the production tonight. What I see is immortality. You hear people brought alive through books, dramas … That is what has happened tonight. Papa wore many caps today.
Hon. Gbajabiamila added,
“I have many takeaways, I am excited. My conclusion is once upon all the time, there was a man. I am glad.”
Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu in his comments at the occasion, opined that, it was Pa. Awolowo’s blessings on Ibeju Lekki that brought about prosperity witnessed in the community today. He then praised the organizers for putting such an interesting and revealing story together especially in a time like this in Nigeria.
“We are not only proud of what Duke and his wife have put forward. This is Lagos for you and we are happy and excited that we can bring back the glory of Glover Memorial Hall.
“Let’s bring more theatres, arts and issues back to Lagos, Western Nigeria, and what we usually know and hear about in years past.”
Sanwo-Olu therefore, encouraged theatre practitioners to bring more historic concerts and stories to Lagos Theatres, in order to relive past memories.
Other eminent personalities present at the event were: wife of the Vice President, Mrs. Dolapo Osinbajo; Professor Oyediran, Alhaja Abah Folawiyo, Mrs. Ayotola Ayodeji, Mr. Tunde Kelani, Co-producer of the drama, Barrister Ladi Soyode, among other dignitaries.
