N’Assembly: No Electronic Transmission of Results

Despite the clamor and popular appeal by stakeholders for electronic voting in Nigeria, especially during the forthcoming 2023 general elections, the National Assembly, has stated that  the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), can make decision about voting procedures through electronic means, but has rejected the idea of electronic transmission of election results.

Quoting from Section 50 (2) of the Electoral Act Bill, the N’Assembly argued that no provision for INEC to transmit results of any election electronically. The section thus reads: “Voting at an election under this Bill shall be in accordance with the procedure determined by the Commission, which may include electronic voting, PROVIDED that the Commission shall not transmit results of elections by electronic means.”

However, stakeholders are still of the opinion that electronic transmission of election results would go a long way in curbing rigging and manipulation of electoral outcomes.
