A statement released on Sunday, by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, (NDLEA), spokesperson, Femi Babafemi, has revealed how one Udeh Charley, a 53-year-old man, was arrested on Friday 3rd December, at the Enugu airport, for ingesting 72 wraps of cocaine, weighing 1.253 kilogrammes.
Babafemi said, Mr. Udeh Charley was arrested during outward screening of Ethiopian Airlines passengers going to Rome, Italy via Addis Ababa.
Upon interrogation while in custody, Udeh, who said he has been living in Italy for over 20 years, also revealed that, he would have been paid €4000, if he had successfully delivered the illicit drug in Italy.
He blamed the downturn on his business, caused by Covid-19 pandemic, for his actions.
Similarly, three persons, a Ghanaian, and two Nigerians were nabbed by NDLEA, at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, in Abuja, and at the Akanu Ibiam international Airport, in Enugu, for trafficking cocaine, and methamphetamine, weighing 9.953 kilogrammes.
Femi Babafemi said, one of the suspects, Uzoh Ndubuisi, was arrested at about 5.30pm on Wednesday, Dec. 8th, during an inward screening of Ethiopian Airlines passengers, at the Arrival Hall of the Akanu Ibiam international Airport, Enugu.
Another suspect arrested at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, was a 25-year-old John Kadja, whose father is from Kumasi, Ashanti region of Ghana, and mother from Nsukka, Enugu State.
He was arrested on Friday, 3rd of Dec., with 2 kilogrammes of methamphetamine, during a search at the airport. On interrogation, the 25-year-old, John Kadja, said, he was travelling to Doha, to work as a labourer.
Again, in Ondo state, a 43-year-old, Onuoha Friday, was arrested on Friday, Dec. 10th, along Lagos-Benin expressway, with one million capsules of Tramadol.
Two major arrests in Onitsha, Anambra state, also confirmed the raid of 238.973 kilogrammes of assorted illicit drugs; and in Delta state, there was an arrest of a 17-year-old, Abdulkarim Shaibu, and 23-year-old, Lawal Saidu, both from Niger Republic.
17-year-old, Abdulkarim Shaibu, and 23-year-old, Lawal Saidu, alongside other four, were nabbed with different quantities of cocaine, heroin, methamphetamine, Tramadol and cannabis.
Other arrests include: Precious Oghenegwoke; Loveth Omukoro; Uche Godwin, and Uti Harrison.
Adam Salaudeen, and Lucky James, was also arrested at Ogori Magongo area of Kogi state, with 214.7kg of cannabis sativa; and Obinna Obinwa, was intercepted with a truck load of various quantities of codeine, Tramadol, Diazepam, and Rohypnol, at the Onitsha head bridge, heading to Delta State.
While commending his officers, Chairman/Chief Executive of NDLEA, Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa, (Retd.) also charged his team to remain vigilant and resolute in their drive to rid the country of illicit drugs.
