The South East Revival Group (SERG), a pan-Igbo sociopolitical pressure organisation, has called for the immediate release of Mr. Obinna Iyiegbu, aka, Obi Cubana, a socialite and business tycoon.
According to the Group,
“We strongly believe that Obi Cubana is targeted because of Anambra State governorship election on November 6.”
Adding that, “Due to his popularity, they want to take him out of the state and embarrass him.”
The Group said this in a statement signed by its President and National Coordinator, Chief Willy Ezugwu, who debated the reasons for
Obi Cubana’s arrest.
SERG also alleged that, President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration has been targeting people of the South East descent, than any other tribe in the country, and therefore, demanded that, the government ‘leave Igbos alone,’ while again advising the federal authorities to focus on the “police officer wanted for corruption in the United States, and some other bullion van tycoons walking freely in the country than subjecting the Igbos to constant harassment, and intimidation.
The Group again opined that,
“In recent times, former Governor Peter Obi and former Secretary to the Federal Government, Ayim Pius Ayim, have been targeted by anti-corruption agencies
all because of their possible emergence, as presidential candidates in their parties to challenge the status quo.”
The pressure group therefore upheld that,
“So, such anti-Igbo phantom allegations, like the ones against Obi Cubana, are not new.”
The South East Revival Group (SERG), likewise recalled how
“Ifeanyi Ubah of Capital Oil was arrested and detained by the federal government, based on suspicion of committing financial fraud, even when it was the Federal government that was owing him.”
The Group added that,
“Despite the long years of neglect of the South East region, self-made Igbo sons, and daughters, are now being subjected to all manners of media trials, while others who are reasonably suspected to have committed deafening financial crimes, are walking freely on the streets, because they are not Igbos.”
The South East Revival Group (SERG), “therefore demands the immediate and unconditional release of Obi Cubana from the EFCC custody, without any further delay.”
