“Following the removal of Governor Dave Umahi & his Deputy Mr. Igwe of Ebonyi state, and in line with the directives of the court, the @OfficialPDPNig has submitted to @inecnigeria, the names of Iduma Igariwe & Fred Udogwu as the new Gov. and Deputy Gov. of Ebonyi State.” This was according to the tweet by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Tuesday evening, after the court ordered the removal of Gov. David Nweze Umahi and his deputy Dr. Eric Kelechi Igwe from office.
The Federal High Court, sitting in Abuja, on Tuesday, sacked Gov. Umahi his deputy, Dr. Igwe, just because they defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC) after been brought to power under the umbrella of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)
In the judgment delivered by Justice Inyang Ekwo, it was upheld that, the “total number of 393, 042 votes governor Umahi secured during the March 9, 2019 governorship election in Ebonyi state, belonged to the PDP and same could not be legally transferred to the APC” because “There is no constitutional provision that made the ballot transferrable from one party to the other.”
The court therefore ruled that both Umahi and his deputy can no longer lay claims to the votes belonging to PDP after their defection; and so, they cease to be the governor and deputy governor of Ebonyi state respectively going forward.
The court then ordered they immediately vacate their leadership positions for a new PDP led government to take over.
