Cotonou, Benin Republic Update

• Igboho in Benin Republic court after arrest at the Cotonou Cadjehoun Airport

• Igboho appears in Cour De’appal De Cotonou, Benin Republic reportedly over immigration related offences

• Yomi Aliyu (SAN), Igboho’s lawyer, says case has been registered in Cour De’appal De Cotonou court. But that the FG has not file charges against Igboho as at Thursday (Daily Trust) (The Guardian) however reported that the Federal Government is presenting three-point complaints against Igboho

• Indigenes of Yoruba descent in Cotonou, storms court in support of Sunday Igboho on Thursday

• Court went on private session; orders supporters and journalists out

• The Guardian also reported that “Igboho wife looked pale in court, say eyewitnesses”

• Igboho’s wife, Ropo, released on Thursday July 22, 2021 

• Court seating on Friday July 23, 2021 to deliberate on Igboho’s matters especially case on extradition or not

• “The Nigerian government planned to extradite him on Wednesday, but our government said the rule of law must be followed as the world is watching us.” (The Punch)

• Benin Republic rejected the idea of hasty extradition.

Igboho’s Update in Nigeria

• Nigeria’s President Muhammadu Buhari wants Sunday (Adeyemo) Igboho extradited back to Nigeria as soon as possible. But Republic of Benin government has refused to follow Buhari’s directives, says not so soon, rule of law must be followed, the world is watching us

• Benin Republic government says proper repatriation trial will be conducted before the extradition of Sunday Adeyemo alias Sunday Igboho

• Igboho’s Media Aide, Olayomi Koiki and some other demonstrators are demanding Sunday (Adeyemo) Igboho’s freedom, say, they are confident in Benin Republic justice system

• Maxwell Adeleye, Igboho’s Communication Manager promised to keep Nigerians updated on the turn of events and if possible, release a statement to this regards

• Protesters in solidarity to Sunday Igboho’s release, in Ibadan, oyo state capital, have also called on Yoruba leaders (traditional leaders) to rise to the occasion

• Ibadan Protesters called on Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi, and other Yoruba Nigerian monarchs

• Ooni of Ife, constituted a 28-man committee under the Ooni Caucus to brainstorm on issues surrounding the arrest of Sunday (Adeyemo) Igboho in Benin Republic. The council is reported to have said they are actively interested in the new development and would will be responding appropriately to issues. The committee is made up of prominent South West leaders: Co-ordinator of the commitee is Professor Akin Osuntokun. Other members of the committee include; Oba Olusola Alao, the Olugbon of Igbon, Senator Biodun Olujimi, Toyin Saraki, Segun Awolowo, Doyin Okupe, Chief Gbenga Daniel and Mr Muyiwa Ige. (Daily Post)

• Pa Ayo Opadokun, former Afenifere General Secretary, in an interviewed followed on Nigeria’s local television, has advised President Muhammadu Buhari to fear God. He believes God will come to the aide of Nigerians

• Nigerians, especially the Yoruba race, believe that Benin Republic court outcome will favour Chief Sunday Adeyemo a.k.a Sunday Igboho
