The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arrested the former Governor of Zamfara state, Abdulaziz Yari, in connection with the N80 billion corruption charges and the ongoing investigation against the suspended Accountant-General of the Federation, Ahmed Idris.

Ex governor Yari, was reportedly arrested on Sunday at his Abuja residence few days after he won the ruling All Progressives Congress ticket for Zamfara West senatorial election holding next year. He was said to have won unopposed.

According to EFCC, Abdulaziz Yari is one of the suspected accomplices in the criminal investigation involving AGF Ahmed Idris, who has been in the EFCC custody since May 16, 2022 facing corruption charges.

Again, sources said, suspicious transactions between AGF Idris, and former governor Yari, were “in the area of 20 billion Naira;” public funds allegedly stolen by Ahmed Idris, which by his role, he was meant to safeguard.

It is however worth mentioning that, the former Zamfara state Gov. Yari, “is not new to anti-graft law enforcement actions. Last year, he was repeatedly held and questioned by the EFCC over allegations that, he criminally diverted billions in Zamfara state’s funds kept in a bank.” (Premium Times)

It is also worth stating that, during Abdulaziz Yari tenure as the governor of Zamfara State, terrorism commonly called banditry, thrived in the state, a menace that is still ravaging Zamfara state communities, and other parts of the north-west geopolitical zone and beyond, even till date.
